Since 1701, the square has been officially called the “Royal Gate Square” (German: Königs Thor Platz ). In honor of the visit of the Russian emperor Alexander I in the autumn of 1805, the decree of the Prussian king Friedrich Wilhelm III received its current name. Due to the rapid population growth in the process of industrialization, the area has gained popularity among poor people. The pre-war buildings remained on the square: Alexander House and Berolina House .

In the post-war period, during the GDR , in 1966 - 1970 . the area was built up with new buildings, and its size increased in the direction of the center of east Berlin . Here appeared the high-rise hotel Park Inn by Radisson Berlin Alexanderplatz (125 meters), a huge store, Teacher’s House and, later, a television tower . The architecture of the former GDR is reminiscent of a large revolving clock , thanks to which you can determine the time in many countries of the world, and the fountain, which was formerly called "Friendship of Peoples."

The long-term plans for the reconstruction of Alexanderplatz include the demolition of the Park Inn hotel and the construction of several high-rise buildings in the ensemble of the square, including the Alexander Tower residential building, which received permission for construction in March 2018.
