Aya Kito ( 木 藤 亜 也 Quito: Aya , July 19, 1962 - May 23, 1988 , Japan ) is a Japanese girl who, having fallen ill at the age of 15, kept her personal diary, entitled as 1 liter of tears ( Jap. 1 ッ ッ ト ル の 涙 Ititiator no namida ) , and described in it the course of her illness, called spinocerebellar ataxia . Aya Kito died at the age of 25, after 10 years of struggle with an incurable disease that caused her both physical and emotional pain, exacerbating general stress for her family. February 25, 1986, two years before her death, her diary was circulated in Japan, and later in other countries. The Japanese film One Liter of Tears (2004) and the drama series Liter of Tears (2005), based on her diary, were shot. As of 2007, Quito Ai’s diary “1 liter of tears” was sold in excess of 18 million copies.
