He studied at Eton and Royal Colleges, where he received bachelor's degrees (1801) and master of arts (1804). In 1801-1828 he worked as a priest .
The author of the famous collection of aphorisms “Lacon, or Many in a few words for thinking people” (“Lacon, or Many Things in Few Words”) ( London , 1826).
Two years Colton traveled to the United States of America . Later he chose Paris as his place of residence, where he opened his own art gallery, collecting in it an extensive collection of paintings. He was fond of collecting rare wines and partridge shooting. Charles Colton's gambling hobbies led to the fact that in the last years of his life he existed at the expense of his immediate family. He was shot, not deciding on the necessary surgical operation.
