History
It was founded on May 6, 1869 , when the Indiana General Assembly accepted land and money from Lafayette businessman John Purdue to create a college of science, technology and agriculture, named after him [2] . The first classes were held on September 16, 1874, while the college consisted of three buildings, in which 6 teachers taught and 39 students studied [2] .
Today, the university is the second in number of students in Indiana, and the second in the number of foreign students in the country [3] , which is the result of an aggressive policy of recruiting students from abroad, mainly from Latin America and Asia .
