History

John Purdue (founder)

It was founded on May 6, 1869 , when the Indiana General Assembly accepted land and money from Lafayette businessman John Purdue to create a college of science, technology and agriculture, named after him [2] . The first classes were held on September 16, 1874, while the college consisted of three buildings, in which 6 teachers taught and 39 students studied [2] .

Today, the university is the second in number of students in Indiana, and the second in the number of foreign students in the country [3] , which is the result of an aggressive policy of recruiting students from abroad, mainly from Latin America and Asia .

International Recognition

The university has made a great contribution to the history of US aviation , and programs in the aviation industry remain among the best and most competitive in the world. Purdue University introduced loans to evaluate flight training, introduced a four-year bachelor's program in aviation, and acquired its own airport . In the mid- 20th century , the university’s aviation programs span advanced space technology . Twenty-two graduates became astronauts , including Virgil Grissom (one of the seven members of the first squad of US astronauts ), Neil Armstrong (the first person to walk on the moon ), and Eugene Cernan (the last person to walk on the moon today).
