Walter Kaufmann (or Kaufmann, German: Walter Kaufmann ; July 1, 1921 , Freiburg , Germany - September 4, 1980 , Princeton , New Jersey , USA ) is a German-American philosopher , translator and poet .

He lived in America since 1939 . For more than thirty years he was a professor at Princeton University .

Best known as a translator of Buber and Nietzsche into English. He also translated Hegel and Goethe , wrote a book about Hegel and contributed to the dissemination of knowledge of his philosophy in the English-speaking world. A fruitful author of books on philosophy, religion and literature. Today his works are in oblivion.
