Life
Polemon was born into a prosperous family, father Philostratus was an influential and wealthy citizen. In his youth, Polemon led a reckless and wasteful life, but once, when he was about thirty years old, being tipsy, at the head of people like him, a reveler, accidentally burst into the Xenocrates school. Xenocrates, despite an unexpected noisy invasion, calmly continued the lecture, and Polemon became interested in his reasoning. After some time, he broke with his past and began to lead a moderate lifestyle. Xenocrates became a role model for him. Thanks to diligence and ability, he was the best student of the school and in 315 BC. e., after the death of Xenocrates, became a scholarch [1] .
Polemon is known for its poise, earnestness, self-control, and advanced beliefs. Among his students were Kratet of Athens , Krantor , Zeno of China and Arkesilay . According to Eusebius of Caesarea , Polemon died in 270/269 BC. e. (in other manuscripts - 276/275 BC) Diogenes Laertius says that he lived as a recluse in the Academy's garden and died of consumption in old age. Kratet inherited the leadership of the Academy [2] .
Philosophy
Diogenes Laertius reports that, according to his views, he was close to Xenocrates, and argued that you need to practice in business, and not in dialectical speculations, “to learn the harmonica from a textbook, but without exercises — it’s like to amaze everyone with questions, not contradict yourself to yourself in your daily routine. ” He appreciated Sophocles and Homer . He said that Homer is Sophocles in the epic, and Sophocles is Homer in the tragedy [3] .
Artwork
According to Diogenes of Laertes, Polemon left several treatises, but already in the dictionary of the Court (X century) it is said that not one has been preserved. Clement of Alexandria quotes him (or another philosopher named Polemon): “Regarding life in harmony with nature” ( dr. Greek ἐν τοῖς περὶ τοῦ κατὰ φύσιν βίου ). [4] Cicero , who spoke of Polemon, who considers life the highest happiness in accordance with the laws of nature, also has a similar passage [5] .
