Biography
Yaroslav Mikhailovich Stelmakh was born on November 30, 1949 in Kiev in the family of the famous Ukrainian writer Mikhail Stelmakh . He graduated from the Kiev Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages, Higher Literary Courses in Moscow and postgraduate studies. He worked as a teacher in universities, translator.
Famous writer Abram Katsnelson recalled the times when he supported young writers of the young Ukrainian playwright Yaroslav Stelmach at the All-Union Seminar, recommending his plays to the then famous Athanasius Salynsky , chairman of the Dramatics Council of the Union of Writers of the USSR, who formed the repertoire of all theaters throughout the country. Yaroslav very much liked Salynsky for his works and, most importantly, his modesty. In conversations, he never once remembered that he was the son of a classic of Ukrainian literature, the winner of all the awards that existed at the time, Mikhail Stelmach.
Yaroslav Stelmakh is known primarily as a playwright. Among his plays there are works for children: “School drama”, “Vincent Prerozumniy” and others. The plays “Hello, Little Tit” and “Ask Once for Herbs” were part of the repertoire of many theaters in the USSR. Yaroslav Stelmakh was engaged in translation.
He also wrote stories, stories for children: “Chimera of a forest lake, or Mitkosaurus from Yurkivka”, “Once in a strange forest”, “The best tent” and others. The works of Stelmakh are marked by a fascinating plot, subtle humor, vividly depicted figures of little heroes.
Car Failure and Death
The car accident that occurred on August 4, 2001 in Kiev, ended the writer's life prematurely. After him left a rich literary heritage and scripts of plays. Yaroslav Stelmakh was buried in Kiev at the Baikovo Cemetery near the grave of his father.
