Biography

Born in Breslau (now it is the city of Wroclaw in Poland ), in a Jewish family who fled to the UK in 1939 [3] . In 1945 he graduated from Peterhouse College of Cambridge University . In 1946, he began working at the University College London under the direction of Theodore Estermann . In 1961, he was appointed professor in the same place. In 1966 he moved to Imperial College London , where he held a professorship until his retirement in 1988. After that, he continued to work there as a visiting professor until 1996.

Scientific Achievements

In 1952, Roth proved that subsets of integers of positive density must contain infinitely many arithmetic progressions of length three. This statement was the first nontrivial case of the more general Szemerédi theorem .

His most famous result, the Thue – Siegel – Roth theorem (often referred to simply as the Roth theorem), was obtained in 1955, when Roth was still a simple teacher at a university college in London. For this evidence, Roth was awarded the prestigious Fields Prize in 1958.
