History
In 2005, the city was renamed in honor of President Laos Kayson Fomvihan (correctly, “Phomvihan”, but the Russian media have already fixed the incorrect transcription of his last name), who was born in the village now located in the region. However, in many modern maps, both Russian-speaking and English-speaking, the city appears under the previous name - Savannakhet. [3] All indexes and names in the city also contain only a version of Savannakhet.
Transport
The " Second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge " across the Mekong , opened in 2007, connects the city with the Thai province of Mukdahan . The highway to the east connects the city with the Vietnamese border point of Laobao ( Quangchi province ). Airport near the city.
