Biography
Peter Kwon Dyg In was born in 1805 in Seoul into a Catholic family. As a child, he lost his father, his mother died when he was 16 years old. After the death of his mother, Peter Kwon Dyg In married and began to work in the store of his older brother. After the store closed, Peter Kwon Dyg In began to produce crosses and medallions depicting Catholic saints for Christians. During the persecution of Christians in Korea, he was arrested on January 16, 1839, along with his entire family. He was repeatedly interrogated and tortured. His wife and brother were also brutally tortured , and, unable to bear it, renounced Christianity and were soon released. Peter Kwon Dyg In, while in prison, wrote a letter to his family so that they could change their mind. One reason for his death sentence was the charge of illegally manufacturing and selling religious items. On May 24, 1839, Peter Kwon Dyg In was beheaded in Seoul along with eight other Catholics.
Praise
Peter Kwon Dyg In was beatified on July 5, 1925 by Pope Pius XI and canonized on May 6, 1984 by Pope John Paul II along with a group of 103 Korean martyrs .
