History

On June 17, 1777, Pope Pius VI issued the bull “Relata semper” , which established the diocese of Szombathely, isolating it from the dioceses of Gyor , Veszprem (today - the Archdiocese of Veszprem ) and Zagreb (today - the Archdiocese of Zagreb ). On the same day, the Diocese of Szombathely entered the Metropolitanate of Esztergom (today - the Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest ).

The first bishop of Szombathely, Janos Siy, built a seminary in 1780, in 1783 - the episcopal residence and in 1797 - the cathedral of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

After the Treaty of Trianon, part of the territory of the diocese of Szombathely passed to the apostolic administration of Burgenland (today - the Diocese of Eisenstadt ) and the diocese of Lavant (today - the Archdiocese of Maribor ).

On March 31, 1993, the Diocese of Szombathely entered the Metropolitanate of Veszprem.
