Diocese of Szombathely ( Hungarian. Szombathelyi egyházmegye , lat. Dioecesis Sabariensis ) - Catholic diocese of the Latin rite in Hungary with its center in the city of Szombathely . It is part of the Veszprem Metropolitanate . The cathedral of the diocese of Szombathely is the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

History
On June 17, 1777, Pope Pius VI issued the bull “Relata semper” , which established the diocese of Szombathely, isolating it from the dioceses of Gyor , Veszprem (today - the Archdiocese of Veszprem ) and Zagreb (today - the Archdiocese of Zagreb ). On the same day, the Diocese of Szombathely entered the Metropolitanate of Esztergom (today - the Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest ).
The first bishop of Szombathely, Janos Siy, built a seminary in 1780, in 1783 - the episcopal residence and in 1797 - the cathedral of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
After the Treaty of Trianon, part of the territory of the diocese of Szombathely passed to the apostolic administration of Burgenland (today - the Diocese of Eisenstadt ) and the diocese of Lavant (today - the Archdiocese of Maribor ).
On March 31, 1993, the Diocese of Szombathely entered the Metropolitanate of Veszprem.
Statistics
As of 2004, the diocese had 294 thousand Catholics (77.8% of the population), 144 priests and 176 parishes [1] . The cathedral of the diocese is the Cathedral of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Szombathely . From 2006 to 2016, the diocese was headed by Bishop Andras Veres ( Hungarian. Veres András ).
