Biography
In November 1093 , after the simultaneous death of Malcolm III and his eldest son from marriage with Edward, Margaret of Scotland, Donald III seized the Scottish throne . Edmund and his younger brothers Edgar , Alexander and David fled to England, where their stepbrother Duncan was at that time.
In 1094, Duncan, with the blessing of William the Red and with the help of his father-in-law’s army, Gospatrick of Northumbria, as well as the people of Lothian, captured Edinburgh and overthrew Donald III. However, he did not stay long with the king. The ousted Donald retreated to the highlands of Scotland, where he teamed up with Mel Petar Mac Leon , the Mormer of Mearns, and rebelled against the British who had arrived with Duncan. Duncan, wanting to extinguish the conflict, sent his allies back, but the rebels did not calm down and on November 12, 1094 they killed the king in Berik. It is believed that the killer was Mel Petar Mack Leon, but the “ Ulster Annals ” and William of Malmesbury argue that the murder was committed by order of Donald and Edmund.
What made Edmund take the side of his uncle is unknown. It is assumed that the childless Donald appointed him his heir. Perhaps Edmund received the title of Prince of Southern Scotland, which at that time was considered more of a colony than an integral part of the Scottish kingdom [1] .
In 1097, the English army under the command of Edgar Etelling invaded Scotland and overthrew Donald and Edmund, seated Edgar on the throne. Donald and Edmund continued the fight. Donald in 1099 was caught, blinded and imprisoned for life in the Reskoubi castle in Angus . Edmund was also captured or surrendered voluntarily and, most likely, abandoning all claims to the crown, tonsured monks in the monastery of in the south of England. There he died over time and was buried, according to his will in the chains [2] . The exact date of his death is unknown.
