Rikuzentakata ( Jap. 陸 前 高田 市 Rikuzentakata-si ) is a city in Japan located in Iwate Prefecture . The area of the city is 232.29 km² [1] , the population is 19,386 people (August 1, 2014) [2] , the population density is 83.46 people / km².

Content
Geographical position
The city is located on the island of Honshu in Iwate Prefecture of the Tohoku region . It is bordered by the cities of Ofunato , Itinoseki , Kesennuma and the village of Sumita [3] .
Catastrophe of 2011
Rikudentakat was almost completely destroyed as a result of the tsunami on March 11, 2011 , about 1.8 thousand houses were destroyed [4] [5] . Total killed 1556 inhabitants, missing 207 people [6] .

Symbols
Cryptomeria is considered to be a tree of the city, a camellia flower, a gray gull as a bird [8] .
