History
- Men's tournament
The tournament in Washington was first held in 1969 in the format of an open tournament in which both professionals and amateurs could participate. The organizer of the tournament was a native of Washington, a former player in the US national team , and then lawyer, businessman and tennis functionary Donald Dell . The main sponsor of the tournament was the Washington Star newspaper. At the insistence of one of the leading participants in the tournament, social activist Arthur Ashe , the first tournament was held in the center of a residential area, for which it was necessary to build temporary stands that could accommodate 2,400 spectators [1] .
Until 1986, inclusive, the tournament was held on clay courts , and then was transferred to artificial turf, the same as at the US Open. Within two years, a modern sports complex worth $ 11 million was erected around the new courts, designed for seven thousand seats and including accommodation for participants. The construction of the stadium was completed in July 1989 [1] .
In 1990, the Washington tournament was included in the grid of the newly formed ATP tour . He was assigned the middle category, ATP Championship Series . Since 1994, Legg Mason, an international investment firm, has become its main sponsor. From 2003 to 2008, the tournament was downgraded to the base category of ATP International , but when forming the new tournament grid of the tour in 2009, it was again assigned the middle category, ATP 500.
- Women's tournament
The tournament was created in College Park , Maryland . The USTA has entrusted the tournament to the local tennis center based on its successful experience in conducting ITF women's tour competitions there. The tournament was held in July and in the last year of its existence grew to 75 thousandth. [2] The champion of that competition, Varvara Lepchenko, took part in the first WTA tournament .
A place on the WTA tour calendar for this competition was freed up by eliminating the MPS Group Championships soil tournament, which was held since 1980 in April, first in Amelia Island and then in Ponte Vedra Beach . One of the champions of that tournament - Nadezhda Petrova - became the first champion of this competition.
In 2012, the tournament was moved to the William HG FitzGerald Tennis Center complex and combined with the local men's tournament.
- Winners and finalists
American tennis player Andre Agassi won the men's singles competition at the tournament in Washington five times, having won the first victory in 1990 , and the last in 1999 . In 2000, Agassi became a finalist in both singles and doubles, but lost both finals. Four more participants won singles in three victories.
In the men's doubles, the representatives of the United States are also the record holders. Marty Riessen , who won in Washington four times with three different partners, as well as his brothers Bob and Mike Brian , who won three of four victories in a row.
In the women's singles of the first four tournaments played, two ended with victories by Slovakian Magdalena Rybarikova , and in the women's doubles four titles on the account of Japanese Suko Aoyama , and each time she played with a new partner.
In 2003, the winners of the doubles tournament were representatives of Russia and Armenia Evgeny Kafelnikov and Sargis Sargsyan . Eight years later, at the first women's tournament, their experience was repeated by Nadezhda Petrova and Yaroslav Shvedova , who won the single and double tournaments. In 2012, the first representative of the former USSR to win the men's singles tournament was the Ukrainian Alexander Dolgopolov .
