Musaf (lit. “addition”) - in Judaism , additional sacrifice or additional prayer on Saturdays and holidays. The Bible prescribes to add special sacrifices on Saturdays, three pilgrimage holidays ( Passover , Sukkot , Shavuot ), Rosh Hashanah , Yom Kippur and the New Moon to the daily morning and afternoon sacrifices in the Temple . After the destruction of the Second Temple , when sacrifices became impossible, the musaf prayer replaced the additional sacrifices. Some lawmakers argued that a musaf should be read only if there is a minyan , but most of them made it mandatory for an individual to read this prayer [1] [2]
