Club career

Heart of Midlothian

Berra is a graduate of the Edinburgh Hibernian Club. On April 26, 2002, Christoph left the Hibbs Academy and signed a youth contract with another team in the Scottish capital - Hart of Midlothian [2] [3] .

Having impressed the club's coaches with his confident play for the youth team of “hearts”, in the summer of 2003, Berra signed his first professional football player contract with the club.

On November 30 of the same year, Christophe made his debut in the first Harts line-up - that day, Dundee United was the Edinburgh rival [4] . Until the end of the 2003/04 season, Berra played just five more games for the Heart of Midlotian. But already in the next football year, the defender won a permanent place in the main team of Edinburgh.

On April 15, 2006, after hitting the Kilmarnock gates, the young football player scored his first goal in his professional career [5] . The fight itself ended 2-0 in favor of Harts, which allowed the Edinburghs to “stake out” their participation in the Champions League for the next season. In the same football year, Berra made a significant contribution to the victory of his club in the Scottish Cup , although he could not take part in the final match against Gretna [6] .

In July 2006, Christoph renewed a collaboration agreement with the Heart of Midlothian by signing a new 5-year contract.

In August next year, the captain of the club, Craig Gordon , left the Harts. 22-year-old Berra was elected the new owner of the captain's armband, which made him the youngest captain in the history of the Scottish Premier League [7] .

Wolverhampton Wanderers

At the end of the 2007/08 season, Christophe made his Scottish debut. This event, plus an excellent game by Berra for the Hearts, attracted the attention of many clubs to the football player, the most persistent of which turned out to be the English Wolverhampton Wanderers . At first, the “wolves” offered the “hearts” for Berr one and a half million pounds [8] . At that time, the Hearts were in search of a new head coach, so the Edinburgh leadership rejected the prospect of a Scottish transfer. Six months later, the Wanderers again turned to the Hart of Midlothian with a 2-million-dollar proposal for Christophe - but this time too they were unsuccessful in the form of a refusal [9] . "Wolves" did not retreat, increasing the amount of compensation for Burra to 2.5 million pounds. This proposal suited the leaders of Harts [10] , and on February 2, 2009, the defender officially became a Wolverhampton player, signing a contract with the English club for a period of 4.5 years [11] .

Already on February 7, Christoph made his debut in the orange T-shirt of his new team in the Championship match against Coventry City [12] .

On August 26, Berra, playing in a match with Newcastle United , celebrated two peculiar anniversaries - the 50th meeting in the League for Wolves and the 200th in his career [13] . On November 19 of the following year, the defender spent the hundredth match as part of Wolverhampton, taking part in the Wanderers vs. Everton duel [14] .

Scotland Team

Being half Scottish (by mother) and half French (by father), Berra nevertheless decided to speak for the “tartan army”.

Christophe's debut in the first Scottish team took place on May 30, 2008, when the Highlanders met in a friendly match with the Czech Republic [15] . On March 28, 2009, Berra first came out in the main squad of the “tartan army” - this happened in the match against the Netherlands team [16] . May 25, 2011 Christophe first scored a goal for the national team. This happened in a duel of the Nations Cup , in which the Welsh players were opponents of the Highlanders [17] .

To date, Christophe has played thirty-three matches for the Scottish national team, scored three goals [18] .
