Story

American football player Quarterback Paul Crew, who had high expectations in the past, left the sport a few years ago due to match-fixing charges that have not been proven in court. After getting drunk and arguing with his girlfriend Lena, he leaves in her car. He is arrested by the San Diego patrol police, and the court gives three years in prison for violating the conditions of parole .

Paul goes to federal prison in Allengville, Texas. Its director Rudolf Hazen turns out to be a big fan of American football, and made his connections to get such a valuable prisoner. He invites Crew to train a team of prison guards led by Captain Knauer, who for several years has been unable to win anything. In parallel, Hazen is preparing to run for state governor , and a positive information background is only to his advantage. Paul, who wants to quietly unwind his term, agrees, and offers to form an additional team of prisoners for training matches in a month.

With the help of a new friend Shustrila, the coach manages to assemble a team, although it is still too weak. The prisoner and former football star Nate Scarborough, who has been sitting here for 16 years, decides to help him. Shustrila advises involving black brothers in the team, their leader Deacon Moss invites Paul to defeat him in basketball one on one. In the game, the convict actively fouls , but Crew tolerates and does not pay attention to this for the sake of the future match. In the end, the coach manages to cleanly take the ball away, to which Moss claims a violation of the rules, and eventually wins. After the game, African-American Earl Magget, admiring Crewe's stamina, agrees to join the team. The coach and his environment decide to improve the quality of the team, having studied the dossiers on prisoners and choosing the most aggressive.

Prison snitch Unger informs overseers about training and selecting strong players. After that, they decide to provoke Magget to a fight, using racist insults, but he keeps himself from this. After this, African-Americans, led by the Deacon, join the training, as well as other dissatisfied with the prison lawlessness. At night, the guard floods the football field with water, but the team continues sports training in the changed conditions. Unger, under pressure from the administration, inserts explosives into Crewe's radio, but Shustrila dies due to the explosion.

A soccer match is becoming a big event in the city. The prisoners' team comes out in full-fledged form with its own name - “Death Machines” (Eng. “Mean Machine”), which was adjusted by Shustril’s cousin working as a driver in Reebok . In the first half of the game, the jailers manage to come forward thanks to dishonest refereeing and fragmentation of the enemy, since the convicts during the game decide to settle personal scores with their offenders. But Crewe manages to convince teammates, and by the break they manage to even the score in the match (14:14). After that, Hazen threatens to hang up the murder of Shustrila on Paul with the testimony of Unger and Knauer, which will extend his term by another 25 years. The chief offers to give the jailers a score of three unrequited touchdowns , Paul agrees, provided that after that he does not injure the prisoners. After that, Rudolph informs Knauer about the settlement of the issue, and asks after playing the above advantages to play as hard as possible.

At the beginning of the second half of the match, Crewe leaves the field, pretending to be injured, which causes outrage from teammates. The guard scores three touchdowns, and with a score of 35:14 it begins to injure prisoners. Seeing that Hazen violates his part of the transaction, Crew returns to the game. But the team does not believe him, allowing twice to fall into the hot hand of the enemy. After this, Paul admits to them that in his career he went on a deliberate surrender of the match because of threats to his life, after which he talks about the threats of Hazen and apologizes. In the future, players score two touchdowns (changing the score to 35:28), and Scarborough replaces the injured Magget. To win the prisoners successfully apply the reception of .

After the match, Knauer thanks Crew for a good game, and promises not to give false evidence against him. Hazen scolds Knauer for the lost match and notices that Crew is on his way out of the stadium. Having declared an attempt to escape, he orders to shoot the prisoner, but the jailer does not do this, since Paul simply followed the soccer ball.
