Biography
Maria Valberkhova was born on December 27, 1788 ( January 7, 1789 ) in the family of ballet dancer and choreographer Ivan Ivanovich Valberkh . She did not follow in the footsteps of her father and did not become a ballerina, but firmly connected her life with the theater becoming an actress [1] .
Maria Valberkhova studied with the actor and playwright A. A. Shakhovsky [1] [2] .
The debut of Maria Valberkhova on stage took place in 1807 . She played the tragic role of Antigone in the play "Oedipus in Athens" by V. A. Ozerov . She was immediately accepted into the troupe with a salary of 1,500 rubles a year, plus 200 rubles wardrobes [3] . However, she did not possess a tragic gift and did not play this role for very long. In addition, there was tough competition with Ekaterina Semenova that reigned at that time on the stage [4] . In 1811, she left the stage [1] .
However, already in 1815 she made her brilliant debut in a comedy role (Countess Leleva in the play Lipetskie Vody by Shakhovsky ), then there was the role of Agatha in the play Khmelnitsky ’s Pranks of Lovers [1] .
Especially for Valberkhova Griboedov , Shakhovskaya and Khmelnitsky wrote the vaudeville “My Family, or Married Bride” (1817) [4] where she brilliantly played the role of Natasha [1] . A. S. Pushkin and V. G. Belinsky praised the comedic talent of the actress [1] [5] . Lermontov intended the first version of his " Masquerade " in 1835 for the benefit of Valberkhova, but she could play only certain scenes because of the censorship ban and only in 1852 [1] .
In adulthood, Maria Ivanovna’s repertoire was replenished with characteristic and dramatic roles [1] . Among her roles is the Countess in “The Marriage of Figaro ” by Beaumarchais [3] .
In 1855, Maria Ivanovna left the stage and began to teach at the St. Petersburg Theater School [1] .
Maria Ivanovna Valberkhova died on September 15 (27), 1867 [1] .
