Extreme ( Dutch Kraainem ; fr. Crainhem ) is a municipality in Flanders, part of the Flemish Brabant province , located in the bilingual electoral and judicial district of Brussels-Halle-Vilvoorde , in the immediate vicinity of Brussels , actually representing a part of its eastern periphery.

The municipality is highly urbanized, includes the city of the same name Extreme. As of January 1, 2008, the population of Krainem was 13.080, of which 27.2% were foreign nationals. The total area of the municipality is 5.8 km², the population density is 2,255 people. on km².
History
A German settlement at this place appeared around 940. The toponym is associated with the word Kraai - kraai ( crow , cf. English “crow”)
Modernity
The official language is Dutch , but there are language benefits for francophones. In 1954, special linguistic rights were granted to local francophones (according to the 1947 census, they made up more than 30% of the population). In 2006, the Union of Francophones of Flanders (UF) won the local election with 76.4% of the vote despite opposition from Flemish Minister Marino Köhlen, who did not want to nominate a democratically elected French-speaking mayor. According to 2008 data, 49.2% of newborns appeared in the families of francophones, 45.2% - among foreigners, and only 5% among Flemings, whose share continues to fall. [3]
