Distribution and Ecology
In nature , the species range covers Central and Eastern Europe , the Caucasus , Asia Minor , and China . On the territory of Russia it is found in the European part , in the North Caucasus and in the Altai Territory . [3]
It grows in the steppes, in shrubs, along forest edges and river banks.
Botanical Description
A shrub with erect, simple or weakly branched, reddish-brown stems up to 30-60 cm tall (in culture up to 1 m), slightly white pubescent.
Leaves are oblong-ovate to narrow-lanceolate, 5-7 cm long (up to 12 cm in cultivated specimens), pointed, leathery, whole-marginal, bare above, slightly pubescent below, green, sessile on both sides.
Flowers with a diameter of 5-8 cm, solitary, drooping, at the top of the stem or branches, purple or black-purple; sepals , including 4, lanceolate or narrow-lanceolate, acute, densely pubescent on the outside along the edges.
Achenes with a short stalk, leathery, obovate, 5 mm long, 4 mm wide, flattened laterally, with a thickened rim and a feathery pubescent nose up to 5 cm long, brownish-yellow or brown. In 1 kg 125 thousand seeds.
Flowering in June - July. Fruiting in August - September.
Meaning and Application
In culture since 1573. In Russia, in culture in St. Petersburg , in the Penza and Orel regions .
It has significant decorative value due to the dark color of the leaves and large flowers. They are used for planting in separate specimens and groups on lawns , along the banks of reservoirs and on lawns.
