Literary work

Battle for the Himalayas

Oleg Shishkin with the Dalai Lama XIV , 1993

In 1999, Oleg Shishkin published the documentary short story “The Battle of the Himalayas. Magic and espionage ” (reprinted in 2003), which contains more than 150 links to documents from various archives. The book received reviews both in Russia [7] and abroad, for example, in the German journal “ The Journal of Intelligence History ”, dedicated to the history of intelligence [8] .

In “The Battle of the Himalayas” many important archival documents and information stored by the closest relatives of the book’s heroes, including the son and grandson of the “ occultist of the country of soviets” A. V. Barchenko , were put into circulation [9] .

The results of Oleg Shishkin’s research on Bolshevik interest in Tibet , OGPU and occultism are cited not only in the books of Russian scientists [10] [11] , but also in foreign studies on the history of Tibet [12] [13] . On the basis of “The Battle of the Himalayas”, a number of articles in the media and books were written, as well as programs and documentaries filmed on the “Culture” and “ NTV ” television channels.

Articles by Oleg Shishkin about Nicholas Roerich and his book “The Battle of the Himalayas” were criticized by representatives and supporters of various Roerich organizations who do not consider his version of Roerich’s connection with the OGPU [14] [15] [16] [17] to be incorrect. So, the head of the Roerichs Heritage Department of the Museum of the East, Vladimir Rosov, in his doctoral dissertation, referred Shishkin’s book to “historical-mystical” novels and short stories that distort the notions of N.K. Roerich’s expeditions, and argued that this version is not only not confirmed by scientific studies, but also denied by official representatives of the Foreign Intelligence Service [14] [18] . However, critics of Rosov noted the proximity of certain provisions in the publications of Shishkin and Rosov, in particular, the involvement of N. K. Roerich in the political processes of Central Asia and the contacts of Roerich and his entourage with representatives of the OGPU [19] .

Doctor of Historical Sciences V. S. Brachev widely refers to “The Battle of the Himalayas” as a source in his books and believes that in some cases the version of Oleg Shishkin about Roerich’s activity during the Central Asian expedition is more plausible than the version expressed by modern followers Nicholas Roerich [20] , while the indologist A.N. Senkevich considers Shishkin proved the version that Nicholas Roerich was a scout [21] .

Oleg Shishkin himself, regarding his study of Roerich’s cooperation with the special services, said that he was primarily interested in the moral aspect, where “it was far from a bright image”, and Roerich appeared as “ Philip Kirkorov of esoterics ” [22] .

Books about Rasputin

In the books of Oleg Shishkin “Kill Rasputin” (2000) and “Rasputin. Crime History ”(2004) he presented a special look at“ Grishka ”, which is represented by an instrument of foreign intelligence services, which sought to bring about a coup in Russia [23] . As an application, the book “Kill Rasputin” contained unique archival documents, memoirs of the former director of the Police Department, S. P. Beletsky , written by him in the prison cell of the Peter and Paul Fortress , and notes by the former hieromonk Iliodor [24] . The book "Rasputin. Crime History ”is cited in scientific journals [25] .

Researchers A.P. Kotsyubinsky And D.A. Kotsyubinsky , who critically evaluate almost all memoirs and works about Rasputin, are also critical of the conspiracy theological concept of the murder of Rasputin proposed by Oleg Shishkin [26] . The author of articles on Rasputin, A. Potapov, believes that the autopsy report of G. Rasputin, which Shishkin cites in the book “Rasputin. The history of the crime ” , referring to a foreign author [27] , is, in his opinion,“ fake ” [28] .

The review of the book “Kill Rasputin” , published in Literaturnaya Gazeta , describes the method of Oleg Shishkin’s work, as a combination of “serious archival research, wild imagination and absolute certainty (or knowledge of that?) That the course of human history is controlled or even would be corrected by the actions of all kinds of secret forces ” [24] .
