Khumbu is a valley glacier in the Nepalese Himalayas , Khumbu region, northeastern Nepal .

The main source of the Khumbu Glacier originates in the basin bounded by the south-western slopes of Mount Chomolungma (Everest) and the summits of Lhotse and Nuptse [1] . At the mouth of the basin, it passes into the 700-meter icefall [1] . The glacier firn line runs at altitudes of 5700β5900 meters. After the icefall, the glacier turns to the south-south-west and takes on the right several large tributaries.
The tongue of the glacier moves at a speed of about 180 m per year. It contains seracs with a height of up to 20-30 m [1] .

Mountaineering
On the Khumbu glacier passes the final part of the route to the climbing base camp under Mount Chomolungma (Everest). The passage of the Khumbu icefall is one of the key sections when climbing Mount Everest through the South Saddle [2] .
