Disanayaka Mudiyanselage Jayaratne ( born Disanayaka Mudiyanselage Jayaratne , Sinhala දිසානායක මුදියන්සේලාගේ ජයරත්න , also known as D.M. Jayaratne ; born June 7, 1931 ) - politician and statesman of Sri Lanka , Prime Minister since April 21 2010 to January 9, 2015 .

Biography
D.M. Jayaratne was born on June 7, 1931. Educated in Doluva Mah Vidyalaya in Gampola , near the city of Kandy . In the mid-1950s, he studied at the Faculty of Arts at Peradeni University . In 1951 , along with Solomon Bandaranaike , participated in the creation of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party . Later he returned to Doluva Mah Vidyalaya and worked there as a teacher, then as postmaster in Doluva (1960-1962) and Gampol. [2]
In 1970, Jayaratne first entered parliament from the PSL, led by Sirimavo Bandaranaike . In 1977, he was defeated in the elections and did not get into parliament. After those elections, only 8 deputies from the Freedom Party remained in parliament. He returned to parliament only in 1989 .
Since 1994, Jayaratne has held ministerial posts in several Sri Lankan governments. He was Minister of Land, Agriculture, and Forestry (1994–2000), Minister of Agriculture, Food, and Cooperatives (2000–2004), Minister of Posts, Telecommunications, and Central Provincial Development (2004–2005), Minister of Posts, Telecommunications, and Agricultural Development (2005-2007), Minister of Plantation Management (2007-2010). In 2001, he was elected Chairman of the Food and Agriculture Association of the Countries of the Asia-Pacific Region. [2]
After the victory of the United People’s Freedom Alliance in the 2010 general election, Jayaratne, as the senior member of the PSL, was sworn in as prime minister on April 21 [3] . According to the current constitution of Sri Lanka, the post of prime minister is largely ceremonial. At the same time, he also holds the post of Minister for Buddhism and Religion.
