Objectivity (journalism)

Objectivity ( Eng. Objectivity ) - one of the basic principles of journalistic craft. It is not so much scientific accuracy that is implied as “such a coverage of facts that excludes emotions and separates facts from opinions” [1] .

Columnist Andrei Arkhangelsky noted that the concept of “objectivity of the press” consists of a combination of subjective, fundamentally different opinions; from the presence of fundamentally different magazines, newspapers, television channels [2] . However, a completely one-sided presentation of controversial content is an undeniable sign of totalitarian, not democratic, journalism. [3]

International practice

The second provision of the International Principles of Professional Ethics of a Journalist says:

Fidelity of a journalist of objective reality. The first task of a journalist is to guarantee people the receipt of truthful and reliable information through an honest reflection of objective reality. The journalist sets forth the facts in good faith, preserving their true meaning and avoiding distortion. He makes the most of his creative abilities so that the public receives enough material to enable it to form an accurate and coherent view of the world. So that the origin, nature and essence of events, the course and state of affairs are understood as objectively as possible

The Finnish scientist Lars Bruun analyzed the journalistic codes of 59 countries: in the first place there is a requirement for truthful dissemination of information (in 53 of the 59 parsed documents).
