History
In 1872, the Krakow Scientific Society was transformed into the Academy of Knowledge, which in 1919 became the basis of the modern Polish Academy of Knowledge.
The main residence of the PAZ was its own building in Krakow on 17 Slavkovskaya Street.
It included 4 departments:
- Philological
- Historical and Philosophical,
- Mathematical-Natural
- Medical (since 1930)
In total, until 1952 PAZ had 676 Polish members and 264 foreign members. PAZ organized annual meetings of members and departments. The whole burden of research and publishing work lay with the commission and committees, which also included scientists who were not members of PAZ.
After the Second World War, a state-independent scientific organization was undesirable for the authorities. In 1948 , it announced its intention to create the Polish Academy of Sciences , and restrictions were applied to the PAZ: financial and censorship, its contacts with abroad were limited, and the work of the publishing house was suspended. Scientific institutions, publishing houses, assemblies and property PAZ was transferred to the Polish Academy of Sciences.
In 1957 - 1958 scientists have attempted to restore PAZ. In response, the authorities created a PAN office in Krakow. The restoration of PAZ became possible only after the change of the political system in Poland in 1989. The restoration was carried out on the basis of the old charter, while maintaining organizational continuity and traditional forms of functioning.
