Biography

Born in 1940 in Fitzgerald (Georgia), Frances Mayes graduated from Randolph-Macon College in Lynchburg, Virginia, and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Florida. In 1975, she received a master's degree from the University of San Francisco, where she eventually became a professor of artistic creativity, director of the Center for Poetry, and chairman of the Department of Creativity. Mayes has published several works on poetry: Climbing Aconcagua, 1977, Sunday in another country (Sunday in Another Country, 1977), After Such Pleasure (After Such Pleasures, 1979), Art of Fire ”(The Arts of Fire, 1982),“ Watch ”(Hours, 1984), and“ Ex-Voto ”(Ex Voto, 1995). In 1996 she published the book “Under the sun of Tuscany. Italy ”(Under the Tuscan Sun: At Home in Italy). The book is Meyes’s memories of buying, renovating and living in an old villa near the city of Cortona in the Italian province of Tuscany . The novel took first place in the New York Times bestseller list, and has been on the list for two years. In 2003, based on the book, the film “ Under the Tuscan Sun ” (dir. Audrey Wells) was released. In 1999, Meyes reinforced her literary success with the release of the second book “Beautiful Tuscany: Sweet Life in Italy” (Bella Tuscany: The Sweet Life in Italy), also becoming an international bestseller. In 2000, the third book was published “In Tuscany” (In Tuscany). The first major novel by Frances Mayes “Swan” (Swan) was released in 2002 . In addition, Mayes is the editor of The Best American Travel Writing 2002, author of travel stories The Year in the World: Travels of the Passionate Traveler (A Year in the World, 2006) . Frances Mayes and her husband spend their time between houses in Hillsboro, North Carolina and Cortona, Italy, where she also serves as art director for the annual Tuscan Sun Festival.
