Walter Veltroni (sometimes Veltroni ; Italian. Walter Veltroni ; born July 3, 1955 , Rome ) - Italian politician, deputy prime minister and minister of culture in the government of Romano Prodi in 1996-1998, mayor of Rome in 2001— 2008, leader of the Left Democrats party in 1998-2001 and the Democratic Party in 2007-2009.

Biography

Born in the family of the RAI manager and daughter of the Yugoslav representative in the Vatican, Cyril Kotnik, Slovene by nationality. At the age of 15 he joined the youth association of communists, in 1976 he was elected adviser to the mayor's office of Rome from the Italian Communist Party . In 1987 he was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies . In 1988 he became a member of the national secretariat of the ICP. In 1992-1996 he was the editor-in-chief of the newspaper " Unita " [1] - the print organ of the Italian Communist Party , which later ceased to exist in 1991, and then the Party of Democratic Left Forces . In 1998-2001, he held the position of leader of the Left Democrats party ; resigned after being elected mayor of Rome . At this post, Veltroni enjoyed considerable support from the townspeople [1] . In 2007, he was elected the first chairman of the new center-left Democratic Party [2] , and in February 2008, resigned as mayor of the city to concentrate on preparations for the parliamentary elections [1] , which, however, center-right Silvio Berlusconi won. In the elections, the basis of the Veltroni program was the revitalization of social policy and political reform, designed to stabilize the political life of Italy [3] . In February 2009, announced the resignation of the party leader [4] .

Veltroni is the author of about two dozen books on various topics.
