Botanical Description
Perennial terrestrial herbaceous plant. Saprofit .
Branched whitish rhizome , fleshy, devoid of root lobes; resembles coral .
The stem is erect, thin, bare, yellow-green, 8-30 cm high.
Scaly-shaped vaginal simple webbed leaves, 2–4 in number, are arranged alternately.
Drooping bare flowers of six petals are collected in loose racemose inflorescences up to 10 cm long. Blossoms in May - June.
The fruit is a box . Fruits in June - July.
Distribution and habitat
The plant is found in the polar and forest zones and in the mountains of Eurasia and North America .
In Russia, it grows in the non-chernozem zone of the European part , in Siberia and the Far East .
Mesophyte and hygrophyte . Often along the banks of rivers and streams, swampy meadows, in damp forests, on peat bogs, in the tundra woodlands .
Guard Status
The species is listed in the Red Book of Belarus , Red Books of many regions, territories and republics of Russia. Protected in Ukraine, Lithuania, Poland, Latvia. Included in Appendix II to the CITES Convention [2] .
