Distribution

It is found almost everywhere, especially in deserts and desert-like regions. Although they are not frequent in the tropics, the genera Cephalodromia and Platypygus are known from these regions.

Description

Flies of small sizes, reaching only 0.5-5 mm in length, have a rather thin body.

Systematics

About 350 species. An ancient group, also known from the Cretaceous ( Procyrtosia Hennig and Proplatypygus Zaitzev) and Jurassic periods ( Palaeoplatypygus Kovalev; 163–168 Ma), as well as from various amber, including Eocene Baltic and Rovno amber ( Carmenelectra Evenhuis [ 2002] [1] 2] .
