Life and creativity
Olivio Sozzi originally studied art in Palermo . Here he married the wealthy heiress Catherine Capello, whose dowry allowed him in 1729 to continue his studies in Rome in the workshop of Sebastiano Conca . In Rome, Sozzi became an adherent of the school of Roman classicism . In 1732, Sozzi returned to Sicily.
The most significant work of Olivio Sozzi is associated with the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in the city of Ispica ( 1763 ). In this church, Olivio Sozzi owns 26 frescoes , considered to be among the masterpieces of 18th century Sicilian art. He also painted the lobby of the Palermo church of Martoran .
Olivio Sozzi died on October 31, 1765 , falling from the forest while working on the frescoes of the great chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in the city of Ispica. Buried in the same chapel.
Francesco Sozzi and Vito d'Anno , the son and son-in-law of Olivio Sozzi, are also famous Sicilian artists.
