Inscription

The “¤” symbol is a slightly raised circle above the main line, from which four beams extend at an angle of 90 ° relative to each other.

To dial in Windows it is necessary to type the numbers "0164" on the numeric keypad , while holding down the "Alt" key.

Symbol History

The symbol was proposed by Italy [1] in 1972 as a neutral symbol instead of the US dollar sign $ (24 16 = 36 10 ) in the international seven-bit character encoding ISO 646 [2] . The symbol entered the international teletype code and some national ISO 646 tables (Swedish, Cuban, Hungarian) [3] .

In the USSR, in the seven-bit encoding KOI-7 N1 / H2 (used in the computers of the SM series of computers and DVK ), the currency symbol replaced the dollar sign and had the slang names “crab”, “turtle”, “sun” or “bug” (cf. ").

Use symbol

The symbol "¤" can be used in cases when a particular computer font is unavailable or there is no sign of a specific currency. Thus, the designation of 2.50 ¤ should be understood as “two and a half units of a certain currency”, which can be defined only from the context.

  • On the forms of optical recognition means removal.

  • In Microsoft Word format, the sign is used to mark the end of a table cell in some view modes.
