The Bibliographic Institute Publishing House ( German: Bibliographisches Institut ) is a publishing house founded by Joseph Meyer in 1826 in Gotha . In 1828, the publishing house was transferred to Hildburghausen .

During the years of Hitler's rule , the “Bibliographic Institute” embarked on the path of glorifying national socialism . The eighth edition of the Big Encyclopedic Dictionary, interrupted at the ninth volume in 1942 , was frankly fascist in nature. After the victory over fascism in 1945, the Bibliographic Institute was liquidated as a joint-stock company. In 1946 he was reinstated in the GDR as a national enterprise . In 1953, the "Bibliographic Institute" settled in Mannheim ( Germany ) as a joint-stock company. In 1984, the Bibliographic Institute and FA Brockhaus merged into the joint venture Bibliographisches Institut & FA Brockhaus , which in 1988 became part of the Langenscheidt Publishing Group.
