Artemy (Pardalakis)

Patriarch Artemius Pardalákis ( Greek Πατριάρχης Αρτέμιος Παρδαλκη ; end of the XVIII century - November 6, 1858 , Constantinople ) - Bishop of the Constantinople Orthodox Church, Metropolitan of Kyustendil. In 1845–1847, he was formally the Patriarch of Alexandria , but because of opposition to his appointment at the department, he was not renounced to the patriarchate.

Biography

Received a theological education. In 1819 he was elected Bishop of Ierapetra (Crete) [1] .

In 1827 he became the Metropolitan of Kyustendil [1] .

His name is mentioned in the Turkish document of 1829 , published by the Skopje Amzi Pasha, giving the right to free movement and conduct Christian rites in the diocese. In the document, Artemy is titled as “Kyustendil Metropolitan”. Since his health was weak, he left Kyustendil and lives in Constantinople, and manages the diocese through his bishop assistants. Such assistants-bishops beat Avksenty (mentioned in 1832 and 1835) and Zachary (mentioned in 1840) [1] .

After the death of Patriarch Ierofei I of Alexandria in 1845, Artemy Pardalakis, by decision of the Patriarch of Constantinople Meletius III and the Holy Synod of the Church of Constantinople, was elevated to the Alexandria Department. Although consecrated patriarch of Alexandria in this period is traditionally carried out in Constantinople, when choosing a candidate guided by the will of the previous Patriarch and the desire of the Egyptian Christians, however, in this case, the Ecumenical throne hastily ordained Patriarch without consulting the Alexandrian Church, rather than appointed by the patriarch himself his successor Chief epitropa Patriarchate Archimandrite Hierotheos (Staphylopathis) [1] .

The Alexandrian clergy and the people, not recognizing Artemy as the legitimate Patriarch [2] , were able to restore against him the Egyptian Viceroy Mohamed Ali . Artemy did not dare to go to Alexandria, and on January 30, 1847, he officially announced his abdication from the throne. Patriarch of Alexandria becomes, as the Egyptians wanted, Hierotheos II (1847-1857) [1] .

Shortly thereafter, Artemy was appointed proedra of Metropolis Kestantiliy and remained in that position until his death [1] . He died on November 6, 1858 in Constantinople. [3]
