The 2005 World Road Cycle Championships took place in Madrid , Spain , from 21 to 25 September. Group races and individual time trials were held with a separate start among men, women and men under 23 years old.
Before the men's group race there was a rumor that the Belgians from Davitamon-Lotto would carry the team leader, Australian Robbie McUen . However, they worked for the best national sprinter, Tom Boonen , who won the group finish. The women's group sprint was won by the German Regina Schleicher . The winner of the race with a separate start, Michael Rogers, made history as the first cyclist to win 3 championships in a row.
