Biography

She studied at the conservatory in guitar class. She began to write poems and stories in early childhood, but she received her education in the engineering department of the José Antonio Echeverría Polytechnic Institute (CUJAE) with a degree in computer engineering. In 1994, the story of Carla "Jubilee" was published in the journal "Revolution and Culture". Later, a performance was staged on its basis at the Center for Dramatic Art of Cienfuegos . She made her debut as a novelist in 1994 . From 1998 she lived in Italy.

After receiving a scholarship from the Alejo Carpentier Foundation in 1998, Carla Suárez moved to Rome , where she continued literary creativity, while also working as an informatics teacher.

In 1999, her first book of short stories “Foam” was published in Cuba , two stories from which formed the basis of television productions in 2002 .

In 2001, Colombia published a collection of stories "The coach for actors." In 2003, Carla moved to Paris, where she received several scholarships to continue her literary work. Her second novel, The Traveler, was released in Spain in 2005 and was translated into French, Italian and Portuguese.

In 1999, the writer won the Lengua de Trapo award in Spain [2] for her first novel “Silence”, and in 2000 the newspaper Mundo included her in the list of the ten best novels of the year. The novel was translated into French, German, Portuguese, Italian and Slovenian.

In 2007, as part of the Bogota Book Fair, it was named among the 39 largest Latin American writers under the age of 39 [3] .

In 2010, the writer moved to Lisbon , where she currently lives. In the same year her novel “Silence” was staged on the stage of the French theater “Peu importe”.

In 2011, Carla Suárez’s novel Havana, Year Zero came out in Portugal. Later - in France, where he received the Carbo Prize of the Caribbean Region and the Big Island Prize. All these years, Carla continued her career as an engineer, taught, and also led literary workshops. She was a member of the jury of the Prize Juan Rulfo and collaborated with the newspaper El País .
