Description

The genus includes six species of strong branched epiphytic shrubs. Stems are cylindrical, flat or triangular, 20–60 cm long, with the exception of Acanthorhipsalis paranganiensis , in which they reach 2–4 m long. Leafy shoots are light or bright green, 2-6 cm wide. Acantorhizalis (unlike ripsalis) have thin setae and a small amount of felt in the areolae.

The flowers are white, orange or red, funnel-shaped, 1.5-2 cm in diameter. Fruits are orange, pink, carmine, spherical or somewhat elongated, 1-1.5 cm in diameter. Seeds are large, brown.

Cultivated as ampelous plants similar to ripsalis . Recommended for collections.

Spread

The genus Akantorpsalis is common in Peru , Bolivia, and in northeastern Argentina . Grow in tropical areas.
