Hanover (New Hampshire)

Hanover is a city located along the Connecticut River in Grafton County, New Hampshire. In 2007, CNN and Money magazine chose Hanover as the second best place to live in the United States [1] . This is where the famous Dartmouth College is located. In addition, Hanover is one of the few cities through the center of which the Appalachian Trail passes.

History

On July 4, 1761, Governor Benning Wentworth laid the foundation for Hanover with his letter, and in 1765-1766 its first inhabitants arrived, mainly from Connecticut . Despite the uneven surface of the surrounding land, the city developed into an agro-cultural settlement. In 1769, Dartmouth College was founded in a village called Plain ( Plain , " Plain "), spread out on a wide and flat plot of land a mile (1.61 km) from the Connecticut River and about 150 feet (45.72 m) over her.

The southwestern part of modern Hanover was known as Dresden, around which in the 1780s. other rebel cities rallied along the Connecticut River. This association was then named the Republic of Vermont . Over time, Dresden became the capital of this republic. However, after several political appearances, the cities returned to New Hampshire as a result of George Washington's persistent actions. A reminder of these events is the presence of the name Dresden in the name of the Dresden School District, the interstate district serving Hanover and Norwich . It is the first and one of the few inter-school districts in the country.

Etymology

"Hanover" (as it was called in the letter) was named either at the local parish in the city of Sprag , or in honor of the reigning British monarch from the Hanover dynasty - George III .

Geography

According to the US Census Bureau , the total area of ​​the city is 130 km², of which only 2.8 km² is water. The main part of Hanover, which holds over 75% of the urban population, is defined as the Hanover Statistically Separate Terrain and includes areas around Dartmouth College and intersections of New Hampshire Highways 10, 10A and 120. The highest point within Hanover is the northern peak of Elk Mountain ( Eng. Moose Mountain ), having a height of 705 meters above sea level. The city lies entirely in the Connecticut River Basin.

According to the 2000 census, the city accommodates 10,850 residents, 2,832 households and 1,761 families. The population density in Hanover is 85.3 people. on km².
