Overview
In the history of the postal service of Funchal, which is the capital of the administrative district of Madeira , originally, from 1868, Madeira stamps were used for postal needs. However, in 1892-1905, there were issued their own postage stamps with the inscription "Funchal" ("Funchal"), which were also in circulation throughout the island. They were replaced by brands of the Azores , since 1910 Portuguese brands were used , and since 1980, Madeira brands have been in circulation again [1] [2] [3] .
Stamp Issues
In 1892, the first eight standard stamps with the original Funchal inscription and face values from 5 to 80 flights were printed in a printing way. The following year, four brands of higher denominations were added to them - from 100 to 300 flights. At the same time, in 1893 a brand of 5 flights was used, and in 1896 a brand of 100 flights was used cut in half to stick on newspapers (as newspaper stamps ) or envelopes, respectively. Such bisects had half the cost [1] [3] .
A new issue of postage stamps took place in 1897 and was then replenished with missing face values in 1898, 1899 and 1905. In total, these issues covered 19 denominations - from 2½ to 500 flights, of which the 100-run mark was again officially approved for use on envelopes in a cut form. These postal miniatures represented the common Portuguese standards of the time with additional imprinting of the names “Funchal” and the denomination numbers in black on the stamped areas (in two cases, red ink was used). One of the brands, worth 25 flights, was published in 1899 with booklets of six each [1] .
In total, not counting the varieties of serrations , bisects and booklet, 34 miniatures were released . On all stamps of Funchal a portrait of the penultimate Portuguese King Carlos I the Martyr is depicted [1] .
