Biography

Born in the village of Askino, Birsk district, Ufa province.

He graduated from the Naval Cadet Corps (1897). The watch commander in the Kamchadal transport and the Gaydamak mine cruiser (1898-1899).

Member of the campaign in China (1900-1901), after which he was a teacher in the officer class of the Training and Artillery Unit.

In 1902, he began the development of the design of the submersible vessel (“low visibility boats”), which he submitted for consideration in February 1904. The boat of the project of S. A. Yanovich was built in St. Petersburg at the Lessner plant , in June 1904 it was tested and in March 1905 she was enlisted in the fleet under the name Keta. On March 24, Lieutenant S. A. Yanovich was appointed her commander. The boat was intended for protection in cooperation with coastal batteries of the near approaches to Nikolaevsk-on-Amur . On July 1, 1905, the Keta, under the command of Lieutenant Yanovich, discovered two Japanese destroyers in the Nevelsky Strait and attacked them. At 10 cables from the target, the boat got aground uncharted on the map, however, the Japanese destroyers, having noticed it, lay down on the opposite course and no longer made attempts to go through the Nevelsky Strait. From June 3 to September 20, 1905, Keta made 170 trips to the sea. S. A. Yanovich commanded the “Keta” until the fall of 1906, after which he was transferred to the service of the Special Commission for the Organization of Coastal Defense, was the manager of the construction of the Amur Flotilla. In December 1908 he was enrolled in the coastal composition .

Captain 2nd rank (1913).

Since January 1916 he was at the disposal of the assistant naval minister.

By October 25, 1917 he remained in the rank of captain of the 2nd rank .

In Soviet times, he worked as a technician in the construction of the Volkhov hydroelectric station , and later, until retiring in 1934, as an engineer in the department of the chief mechanic of the Kirov plant in Leningrad .
