Amritsar ( W. Punj. ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਜ਼ਿਲਾ ; English Amritsar ) is a county in the Indian state of Punjab . It was founded in 1947 . The administrative center is the city of Amritsar . The area of the district is 5075 km². According to the 2001 All-India Census, the district had a population of 3,096,077 people. The adult literacy rate was 67.3%, which is higher than the average Indian level (59.5%). The share of urban population was 39.5%.
