History
The city of Shopian was often the center of political unrest. In 1979, Fri. Svarup Nath Saraf, a veteran of the National Conference of Jammu and Kashmir, stood at the head of the movement for Sopian to receive district status. As a result, the status of the district was assigned to Shopian by order of Gulam Nabi Azad .
In 2009, riots occurred here, allegedly provoked by the rape and murder of two women [1] . Police were charged with concealing the facts. On June 3, 2009, the government appointed a commission led by honored judge Muzaffar Ahmad Jan to investigate the case. The 400-page report of the investigators concluded that law enforcement officials were embarrassed by the hostility of local clans [2] . The case received wide publicity .
