Biography
The son of an amateur musician, author of salon piano pieces. He studied in Prague at a music school founded by Joseph Proksch , with the pianist Vilém Blodek , then in 1873 - 1874 . at the Prague school of organists at Frantisek Skugersky .
From 1876 he worked as a music teacher with the princes Fürstenberg in their Czech estate Lana. In 1884 , accompanied Antonin Dvorak on his tour to London . Since 1889, professor at the Prague Conservatory , in 1907 - 1918 . its leader; among the disciples of Caan, in particular, Erwin Schulhof .
Author of the operas The Fugitive ( German: Der Flüchtling ) and The Germinal ( French Gérminal ), the fairy-tale ballets Bajaya ( Czech Bajaja ; 1897 ) and Olim ( Czech Olim ; 1904 ), and the symphonic poem Sakuntala , a piano concert, chamber and vocal music, as well as numerous piano adaptations of works by Czech composers, which contributed to the popularization of Czech music, especially Bedřich Smetana’s compositions. In 1913 he published a textbook of the piano game ( Czech Postup při vyučování hře klavírní ), in 1921 - a book of memoirs.
