Lipkin Shahak was born in Tel Aviv on March 18, 1944. In 1962, he began a military career in the Tsanghanim brigade . After the Six Day War , he was appointed commander of the Duhifat battalion. In 1973 he took part in the special operation " Spring of Youth " in Beirut. In 1977 he was appointed commander of the Tsanghanim brigade. From 1983 to 1986 he served as Commander of the Central Military District . After that, he was the head of the intelligence department of the Israel Defense Forces . From 1991 to 1995 he served as Deputy Chief of the General Staff. With his direct participation, the operation "Solomon" was carried out to export Ethiopian Jews to Israel.

In January 1995 he replaced Ehud Barak as Chief of the General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces. He took part in secret negotiations with Syria, including the Syrian chief of the general staff.

After leaving the army, he took up politics, creating with the Dan Meridor and Roni Milo a “ Center Party ” ( Hebrew מפלגת המרכז ). He claimed to be the leader of the party, but according to opinion polls, Yitzhak Mordechai took this post. He served as Minister of Tourism and Minister of Transport. In the 2001 election, he joined the Israel Akhat party ( Avoda party’s bloc), in the same year Amnon Lipkin-Shahak left the Knesset and political life.

He was married to the famous Israeli journalist Tali Lipkin-Shahak, the father of five children. He died on December 19, 2012 at the age of 68 in the Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem from leukemia .
