The holiday is timed to coincide with the most important event in the history of Bulgarian statehood - the unification of Bulgaria on September 6 (18), 1885 . According to the Berlin treaty of 1878, Bulgaria was divided into three parts: the Principality of Bulgaria (with the capital Sofia), the autonomous region of East Rumelia (the capital is Plovdiv ) and Macedonia , which was completely controlled by the Ottoman Empire . The situation of the Bulgarians in Macedonia was very unenviable, and many of them were forced to flee to East Rumelia, where, together with the local population, they began to organize protests that ended in a military coup on September 6 (18), 1885 , which was actively supported by the Bulgarian prince Alexander I Battenberg . The result of the coup was the act of accession of Eastern Rumelia to the Principality of Bulgaria in the same year. Violation of the Berlin Treaty subsequently cost Alexander Battenberg a crown, but in the memory of the Bulgarian people he forever remained the Unifying King [2] .
Despite the significance of this event, it cannot be said that this holiday is celebrated in Bulgaria very widely, although themed events are held in the country dedicated to this day, and the Bulgarian media do not forget to congratulate compatriots on the anniversary of the reunification of the Bulgarian people.
