Khojak tunnel

Khojak tunnel.jpg

The Khojak Tunnel is a two-track railway tunnel in Pakistan in the Balochistan district of Kila Abdullah on the border with Afghanistan, one of the longest tunnels in Central Asia and the longest tunnel in Pakistan with a length of 3,912 meters, located at an altitude of about 2 kilometers on the road between Quetta and Kandahar . The tunnel was designed by English specialists in the middle of the 19th century in connection with preparations for the wars in Afghanistan and the construction of the Sibi-Quetta-Chaman railway, during the hype in the administration of British India, caused by an imaginary or real threat associated with the approach of the borders of the Russian Empire to Afghanistan . The tunnel was opened in 1891 after the Second Anglo-Afghan War , it was built in three years and, oddly enough, is still perceived in Pakistan as a monument to the struggle of the British against the threat of Russian expansion and is depicted on the Pakistani banknote 5 rupees. The special significance of the tunnel is explained by the fact that the path through the Khojak and Bolan passes is one of the two main routes from Afghanistan to Pakistan and is the second road from Central Asia to India after the Khyber Pass .
