Shaheen , or the red-headed peregrine falcon [3] , desert falcon [4] ( Latin Falco pelegrinoides ) is a species of birds of prey of the falcon genus.

DescriptionAppearance and behavior is similar to a peregrine falcon , but a little smaller, the top is lighter, the bottom is buffy with a less developed pattern, there are bright red spots on the top and the back of the head [5] . Body length 33-39 cm. Females are larger than males. The length of the wing of males is 274-302, females 315-332 mm. Male's weight is from 330 g, females are about 500 g (the maximum recorded weight is 750 g). The wingspan is 76–98 cm. The back of adults is pale-smoky-gray with more or less noticeable reddish edges of feathers of the mantle, the bottom is reddish with a relatively weak development of pestrin. Young on the top with a more or less reddish head, with wide red borders of feathers, on the bottom ocher-reddish with wide brown nastolian irregular brown transverse pattern of the sides [1] .
SpreadDistributed in deserts and dry foothills (up to 1500 m) of North Africa , the Middle East , the Arabian Peninsula , Iran , Afghanistan , Pakistan , India ( Kashmir ), Central Asia , in the mountains and foothills of the south and south-east of Kazakhstan from Talaskogo Alatau to Tarbagatay or even Southern Altai [5] [2] . It is possible that it inhabits uplifts in Kyzyl Kum , the western steep coast of the Aral Sea and Ustyurt chinks. On passage and wintering, it is found somewhat wider, to the river valleys and human settlements in the foothill zone [2] .
LifestyleIt nests on the rocks, leads a sedentary lifestyle. The diet is dominated by birds: larks , heaters , hazel grouses , desert partridges, and others. Ecology, breeding biology, behavioral patterns - like a peregrine falcon .
ClassificationSahin is sometimes regarded as two desert subspecies of the Falcon peregrino peregrinoides and Falco peregrinus babylonicus .

- F. p. babylonicus Sclater, 1861 - lives in Central Asia
- F. p. pelegrinoides - in North Africa
GuardThe species is included in the Red Books of the countries of Central Asia , where its number is no more than a few hundred pairs.
