Ethekwini Metropolitan Municipality is an urban district in the province of KwaZulu-Natal ( South Africa ). The word "Etequini" probably comes from the word zulu or braid , meaning "bay."

Etequini urban district was established in 2000. The administrative center of the district is the city of Durban . According to the 2001 census, the majority of the district's population were native speakers of Zulu .
