President of the Senate of France

The President of the French Senate is elected for a term of three years after each renewal of the Senate, represents the chamber in relations with other French institutions and holds meetings. [one]

He has significant constitutional powers: in particular, if it becomes necessary to dissolve the French National Assembly, the President of the Republic is obliged to coordinate this issue with him. In addition, the President of the Senate of France appoints 3 out of 9 members of the Constitutional Council of France, to whom he may refer for consideration a particular project or agreement that he considers to be contrary to the Constitution.

The powers of the interim acting president of the Republic make him the “Second State Person.” In the event of a vacancy for one reason or another, the office of the President of the Republic, or if it is impossible to fulfill his official duties, the President of the Senate shall perform - until the next election - all the duties of the President of the Republic, but he does not have the right to call a referendum or dissolve the National Assembly. The Chairman of the Senate, Alain Poer, thus twice served as President of the Republic: in 1969 and in 1974.
