Biography
Got the first music lessons from his mother Muazzze Gökmen, an opera singer. Then he studied at the Ankara Conservatory in the piano department with Ferhunde Erkin and in the composition department with Ilkhan Baran and Ahmed Adnan Saigun . In 1975 - 1979 received a conductor's education in Italy, at the Academy of Santa Cecilia , including under the guidance of Franco Ferrara . In 1980 , he won the Gino Marinuzzi International Conducting Competition.
In 1984 - 1989 Gökmen headed the opera house in Ankara, in 1992 - 1995 . was the artistic director of the Turkish State Opera and Ballet Theater and again headed it in 2007. At the same time in 1991 - 2006 . Gökmen was the chief conductor of the Izmir Symphony Orchestra, and in 2006 led the Presidential Symphony Orchestra .
