Story

John and Mary accidentally met in a bar, in a normal conversation, finding a mutually interesting topic - the film-parable of Jean-Luc Godard “The Weekend” . By the way the dialogue develops, it becomes clear that they have not seen the film and only create the illusion of awareness. On the same night, relationships become intimate. The next day, each in his own way experiences what happened at night. Everyone recalls his previous love story. And only in the evening, meeting and returning to bed, they realize that they do not even know each other's names.

Cast

  • Dustin Hoffman - John
  • Mia Farrow - Mary
  • Michael Tolan - James
  • Olympia Dukakis - John's mother
  • Clevelon Little - filmmaker

Rewards

The BAFTA Award for Best Actor was awarded to Dustin Hoffman for two films of 1969 at the same time - John and Mary and Midnight Cowboy . Mia Farrow was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Actress for three films at once: “John and Mary”, “Rosemary's Baby” and “Secret Ceremony” , but did not receive the award. The nominations of these actors for the Golden Globe Award for best actress - comedy or musical and for best actor - comedy or musical also turned out to be inconclusive.

Criticism

The film reviews of 1969-1970 left the film without special attention. An article by the authoritative critic of the Chicago Sun Times by Roger Ebert comes down to retelling the plot and some moralizing on the exact reflection in the film of the morals of the youth of those years. [one]

Viewers of the last ten years have responded about the film in the discussion pages of the film on the IMDb site [2] with almost unanimous enthusiasm:

  • “Everyone undeservedly forgot this little pearl of Peter Yates according to the sensual and witty script of John Mortimer. Directing, acting and plot are almost perfect. Alas, the film was really cool for those years, but quickly went out of fashion. ”Private user from England.
  • “This is a seasoned, calm and surprisingly realistic film about how people, communicating, reacting to each other, try to create new relationships ... If you are looking for an empty romantic comedy with popular songs and predictable plot twists, then you are not here. But if you are interested in a calm but emotional life story - watch this movie »US User.
  • “The story of one night and the rainy day that followed, of a couple who knows each other in a guy’s rented apartment on Riverside Drive 52 (today the prices for such apartments in this area are astronomical!) ... My feeling is that the audience will empathize with this couple and wish them many more nights together »User from USA.
